TILE Trends Spotted at my 2021 Parade of Home Tours

Picking the right tile can be the key to an amazing interior space! today I will share top tile trends spotted at this year’s parade of homes as well as show examples…

First when picking tile…what is the purpose for the area? Will it be for a bathroom, shower, floor, or backsplash? A kitchen floor or backsplash? The first trend I noticed is shown in this bathroom and kitchenette below, in the shower and backsplash behind the vanity…to make things easier, they picked a similar material but varied the shape which added fun texture plus extra details for the space. NOTE: It does not always have to be the same material and you can achieve the flow with other contrasting materials, however if you pick the same tile material just different shape, 100% of the time you wont go wrong. Here are a few examples of what I mean.

This bathroom below…they used the same color porcelain tile on the backsplash and on the shower wall however they varied the shape PLUS the color of grout for a fun POP. For the backsplash, it looks like they used a 1×6 tile with black grout, then on the shower walls they used a 5 x5 or a 6x 6 black tile with a white grout. I LOVE how simply varying the shape of tile and grout color, it will create fun interest and contrast. This bathroom is gorgeous!!! would you agree? Another space that used this key idea of similar tile just a different shape is this modern kitchenette in HOME #9 BUILD by Chatwin Homes, Interior Design by The Lifestyle Collective Design

They used a charcoal stone tile on the backsplash wall and flooring of the basement kitchenette, with a 3×8″ size on the walls, and a larger format size on the floor.. 18×36″. By using the same type of tile but different shape, you achieve harmony with the perfect contrast, plus texture and flow.

The second trend I noticed, is the use of variegated tiles. As shown in the kitchen and kitchenette below. The tile was the same size and shape but the color throughout is varied going from white to varying shades of gray throughout creating a pattern. This style of tile was used in many of the homes, from a kitchen backsplash to a shower wall or backsplash behind the bathroom vanity. This tile comes in a couple of shapes and colors. The one I saw most is the white, it has grays in the variation. It comes in a 5×5 tile and a 2.5 x 8 tile size. Either one looks amazing. This first image is a backsplash used in the kitchen from home #26 built by Heritage Custom homes, Interior Design by Erin Hansen Design. This home was amazing in its presentation and design. Click here to see my full tour. They used a 5×5 variegated white tile with gray frost grout in a stacked pattern. Loved how it turned out.

As well this kitchenette below used the same style of tile but in a 2.5 x 8 size laid in a subway pattern. Grout color looks like they used white. I like the shape of this tile backsplash however I would lay it in a soldier stack pattern instead of subway. Subway pattern will always be a classic style however the stacked style is most popular right now.

The most popular pattern trends I noticed with most popular first…. were 1-stacked, either horizontal or vertical, 2-herringbone, and 3-brick lay.

Last, I saw a couple of repeat tile trends….simple white 2.5 x 8 tile… laid in a subway pattern. As well just simple white tile laid in a new popular pattern, stacked, either horizontal or vertical.

I also noticed a couple walls with white painted brick on a backslash or a feature wall. I think painted brick on inside walls may be losing its popularity. But painted brick on the exterior walls is still very popular. What do you think?
